Alberta, Canada Waterfowl Hunting with Sean Mann Outdoor Adventures

Fellow Waterfowlers,
I have an exciting opportunity to tell you about! As you know I’ve been hunting ducks and geese for over 40 years. I really don’t hunt anything else! I’ve traveled to the borders of the continent in pursuit of every variety of North American duck and goose. Some of the stops along the way have been memorable, some less than memorable, and a few have been truly spectacular. One destination has called me back again and again, and again: Alberta, Canada!

The area that I hunt is the narrowest part of the “funnel” at the intersection of the Pacific and Central Flyways. We see an enormous variety of waterfowl species. Seven varieties of Canada Geese, both “Specklebellies” (greater and lesser white fronted goose), all of the white and blue geese and every duck in North America is available here.

September and October are “prime time”; the migration is in full swing. There is such a variety of waterfowl on the move during this two month period, that you’ll have a hard time deciding which birds to hunt! To make it easier, I hunt them all. I target quality; mixed-bag hunts to give you the full flavor of the region during this special time of the season.

For the 2010 season I will be personally inviting just one group of hunters a day to participate in this spectacular Alberta waterfowling adventure. If you’re a serious waterfowler, you owe it to yourself to experience this trip. Space is very limited, so don’t miss out! Get your buddies and your gear together, and give me a call to make arrangements today! The only problem you’ll have is figuring out how to come back again, and again, and again!

--- Sean Mann

Your Host and Guide - Sean Mann has been guiding waterfowl hunts for over thirty years. He began guiding waterfowl hunters on Chesapeake Bay and his ability with decoys and calls quickly made him the most requested guide in the region.

In 1985, Sean won the World Goose Calling Championship with a call that he designed, refined, and patented, “The Eastern Shoreman.” He repeated his victory in 1986 and in 1995, Sean became the first-ever World Goose Calling Champion of Champions. He out-called seven other World Goose Calling Champions in head-to-head competition to capture competition goose calling’s highest honor. This victory retired him from World Goose Calling Competition. He’s also the three-time Mason-Dixon Duck Calling Champion, and retired from that competition as well.

It’s no secret that Sean’s calls started a “calling revolution.” Since 1985, Sean’s calls have won 19 World Championship titles. Winners of 23 World Championship titles now use them day-in and day-out. Sean is the host of Beretta’s Waterfowler’s Edge TV show, guides hunters, makes custom goose and duck calls, and gives instructional seminars across the continent.

This fall, he will be guiding you and your friends, on a hunt to remember, in Alberta, Canada.

Alberta - above Montana, and nestled between Saskatchewan and British Columbia, Alberta is a sight to behold. Rolling fields of peas, barley, and wheat stretch as far as the eye can see, and provide a smorgasbord for the waterfowl that visit the area. An incredible variety of ducks, geese, swans, and cranes migrate through the area, and every day brings a fresh group of birds. Lakes, ponds, and potholes are everywhere, and every one of them serves as a safe evening roost for the southward visitors.

It’s a waterfowler’s paradise. Practically every variety of Canada Goose is found here, from the diminutive Cackler to the majestic Giant- Two varieties of White-Fronted Geese (Specklebellies)- the lesser, which flies down the Pacific and Central Flyways and the greater, or Tule which winters in California’s Tule Lake, and two varieties of Snow Geese, the Lesser Snow Goose and the tiny Ross Goose whose bill doesn’t seem an inch long, stage here in numbers that are impossible to imagine. Mallards and Pintails are found in every pothole, slough, and lake.

This is wild country, “Big Sky” country.” You’ll see elk, moose, mule and whitetail deer, coyotes, magpies, bison, badgers, weasels, minks, eagles, owls, hawks, falcons and sandhill cranes. Make sure you bring your best camera with plenty of memory. “Fun Savers” won’t cut it here.

Your Hunt -Sean guides every day. He is among the best there is at landing waterfowl. You will be shooting at ducks and geese within a few feet of the ground. Your shots will typically be from 5 feet to 15 yards away, and 2 to 5 feet from the ground, “skeet gun” range.

You’ll hunt from safe, comfortable, portable blinds that shield you from the elements, and hide you from the birds. These blinds are constructed so that you can comfortably watch the birds work, and when the time comes, get to them quickly, accurately and most of all, safely.

We use the finest decoys available and replace them every year to make sure the rig is in tip-top shape for your hunt.

In Alberta, we are now able to use electronic calls of snow and blue geese in the fall season, when using a rig comprised entirely of snow and blue goose decoys. So, WE WILL!

Ever imagine what sounds 100 Ross’ Geese make when they are only 10 feet from you? Have you ever felt how much air the wings of 60 Giant Canada’s move? You’ll find out with us, in Alberta.

We’ll awaken at “O Dark Thirty” and depart for the field together, set the spread, and let the fun begin for the morning shoot! When the birds finish their morning routine, we’ll head back to the lodge for a wonderful brunch.

Then it’s back out for the afternoon shoot!

Daily Limit- 8 Dark Geese, 20 White Geese, and 8 Ducks per man per day.

Possession Limits- 16 Dark Geese, 60 White Geese, 16 Ducks.

Our Lodge - Not only is the hunting outstanding, but so are the comforts afforded our guests. Quality accommodations at our log lodge are included, and based on double occupancy. The lodge provides all the comforts of home. There are six bedrooms, three bathrooms with showers, digital television and a surround sound system.

A large deck wraps the building and is the perfect spot to enjoy a relaxing moment in the evening or mid-day as the sounds of nature serenade you. Geese are usually migrating overhead, and hopping to the fields and potholes that surround our property. In the evenings you’ll often here wild elk bugling in the distance and we see moose, deer, and a variety of other Critters!

We even have a clays course to “get your shootin’ eye in tune” before your first hunt!

Meals - Superb home style meals including prime cut steaks and wonderful desserts perfectly compliment your hunt. Let us know if you have any special requests or favorites. We love to see you smile!

Due to the early hour of our morning departures, a “Continental” breakfast of coffee, juice, rolls, muffins, cereals and fruits is available before the hunt.

Guns- Make sure you bring a gun that is reliable enough to have 2 to 3 boxes of magnum shells go through it each day. Open chokes are preferred; skeet, improved cylinder, or Pattern-Master choke tubes work best. Most people bring 12 gauge 3” guns, but don’t be afraid to bring your 20 gauge. All of the shooting can be done with a 3” 20 gauge gun, with skeet tubes.

Ammo - Non-Toxic shot is required in Canada for all waterfowl hunting. You can bring 250 rounds of ammunition into Canada duty-free, or we can arrange to have your ammunition there when you arrive.

Clothing - Weather in this part of the world is as wild as the land itself - warm one day and snowing the next. So, plan your clothing in layers:
  • Quad Parka & Bibs - waterproof, insulated, brown & beige camo (whatever pattern you like)
  • Polypropylene underwear in medium, and heavy weights
  • Quality, comfortable boots that are waterproof and warm. Knee boots are great!
  • You probably won't need hip boots or waders. We usually hunt in fields. But we have a few leaky pairs at the lodge in the event that we do need them.
  • Gloves - insulated and waterproof

How Do I Get There? From the US, fly to Edmonton, Alberta. You can rent a car, and be at our lodge in two and a half hours. If you’re driving, give us a call. We’ll supply all clients with a map thirty days prior to their arrival.
